Currently the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is the organization that has been tasked with stabilizing the international monetary system, which can fluctuate at any time of the day. If the monetary system were allowed to fluctuate on its money countries would find themselves in a difficult situation, which they would have, very little impact on their own. The world has seen a number of different systems over the last 150 years, from the Gold Standard to the systems we have in place today. So far the IMF has been the most successful, but even it has had to make some drastic decisions, like the one in Argentina in 1991 the IMF ruled that it would not bail them out again. The Argentinean Economy was teetering and the IMF ruled that more loans would be futile. Argentinas money was tied to the US dollar, 1 for 1, but the system was failing and the IMF ruled that drastic measures would be needed, before more help could be provided. In the aftermath the economy and stability of the Argentine nation crashed (Blustein, 54). This is a drastic case, but the IMF must provide financial stability, it cannot just provide loans through the World Bank to hold off the inevitable. Before I get into the real mission of the IMF lets first take a look at a few of the international monetary systems that were used in the past. The first adoption of many of the functions of the modern international monetary system can be traced back to the gold standard. The gold standard was the system that was in use from the late 19th until early in 20th century up until just after World War I. The gold standard was based on the free circulation between nations of gold coins of standard specification, mainly based on the gold coins produced by the Royal Mint in England. Under the gold standard system, gold was the only standard of value; in short all currency and trade goods were fixed on the value of gold. The reason the gold standard collapsed was the lack of liquidity; the worlds supply of money in circulation was limited by the worlds supply of gold. The discovery of a new gold field could cause prices to rise. The increase in trade and other problems with the system caused the international gold standard break down in 1914. The gold standard was replaced by the gold bullion standard during the twenties under which nations no longer minted gold coins but backed their currencies with gold bullion and agreed to buy and sell the bullion at a fixed price. Similar issues caused the gold bullion standard system to collapse, and it only lasted about ten years. Gold continued to play an important part in the monetary system with the adoption of the Gold-Exchange System used in the period after World War II, trade was conducted according to the gold-exchange standard. The participating nations fixed the value of their currencies not with respect to gold, but to some foreign currency, which is in turn fixed to and redeemable in gold. Most nations fixed their currencies to the U.S. dollar and retained dollar reserves in the United States, which became known as the key currency country. The decision to go to ultimately go to the Gold-Exchange System was made at the Bretton Woods international conference in 1944. The result of the conference ultimately led to the creation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF would be tasked with maintaining a stable exchange rate on a global level (Galbraith, 160). The IMF continues to the present day and the world does not seem to be moving away from its support of the IMF. The IMF has dealt with two key changes in the way the monetary system has been dealt with, both involved US currency. The first led to the Two-Tier System which was occurred during the sixties, as U.S. commitments drew gold reserves from the nation. Thi s caused the dollar to weaken, leading some countries exchange dollars for gold, this led to a drain on U.S. gold reserves. The two-tier system was created in 1968, In the official tier, consisted of central bank gold traders, in this tier the value of gold was set at $35 an ounce, to keep gold reserves stable gold payments to no central bankers were prohibited (Mayer, 1). The second tie was the free-market tier, mainly all nongovernmental gold traders; golds price fluctuated like a normal market, through supply and demand. Gold and the U.S. dollar continued to be the major reserve asset for the worlds central banks. This system did not stop the drain on U.S. gold reserves; in 1971 the United States was forced to abandon gold convertibility. This action left the world without a single, unified international monetary system. This is considered to be the end of the fixed rate system, which evolved from the collapse of the gold standard way back in 1914 (Greider, 251). With the end of the two tiered system, there was a period of high inflation after the United States abandoned gold convertibility. This action forced the IMF to agree (1976) to a system of floating exchange rates, this formally ended the gold standard. The values of various currencies were to be determined by the market. This is something we experience today as we convert currency during international travel; it changes on a regular basis. The US dollar was and is still seen as the key currency, the Japanese yen and the German Deutschmark strengthened and became increasingly important in international financial markets. The introduction of the euro was introduced in financial markets in 1999 as replacement for eleven mainly European currencies (including the Deutschmark). It began circulating in 2002 in 12 EU nations; the euro replaced the European Currency Unit, which had become the second most commonly used currency after the dollar. Today, though in a downward trend, many large companies use the euro rather than the dollar in bond trading (Greider, 24). Now that I have explained the evolution of the monetary system, you might be asking what does the IMF do? The IMF is the worlds central organization for international monetary cooperation and is headquartered in Washington, DC. The organization depends on cooperation of all participating countries in the world to work together to promote the common good of the monetary system. The IMFs primary purpose is to ensure the stability of the international monetary system; which currently is a system of exchange rates and international payments that enables countries (and their citizens) to buy goods and services from each other. This action is essential for sustainable economic growth and to raise the living standards of the worlds population (IMF.COM). The IMF is currently trying to maintain economic stability and to prevent financial crises in the international monetary system. The IMF continuously reviews national, reg ional, and global economic markets for financial developments. It also provides advice to member countries, encouraging them to adopt policies that foster; Economic stability throughout the world Reduced the vulnerability to economic and financial crises Raise living standards The IMF also provides a forum where member countries can discuss the national, regional, and global consequences of their policies. The IMF also makes temporarily financing available to member countries to help them address balance of payments problems; when countries are short of foreign exchange because their payments to other countries exceed their foreign exchange earnings. This is the situation that Argentina found itself in, when the IMF denied them short term loans, like a banker the IMF must ensure they can repay the loan. The IMF also provides technical assistance and training to help countries build the expertise and institutions they need for economic stability and growth (IMF.COM). Obvi ously the as seen in the current recession the IMF cannot avoid every financial crisis, but it can help ensure that money is available to keep it spiraling out of control, much like the Great Depression of the 1930s. As I have stated the IMF is an organization of cooperating member countries. Crucial to the monetary system is the World Bank, they both have similar functions and the actions of each often appear as one, the Bank and the IMF are separate entities. To clear up the confusion it essential that the following differences are noted; The Bank is primarily a development institution. The IMF is a cooperative institution that seeks to maintain an orderly system of payments and receipts between nations. The IMF and the World Bank have and serve different purposes, they each have a distinct structure, funding is from different sources, assists different categories of members, and each have distinct goals(Greider, 75). To further help distinguish the IMF and the Worl d Bank, the bank has one primary goal; it promotes economic and social progress in developing countries. They accomplish this by helping to raise productivity so that their people may live a better and fuller life. This does not happen overnight and is not continuous, the general upward rise in the standard of living around the world since WW II is testament to the success of the World Bank. On the other hand remember the IMF tries to stabilize sudden and unpredictable variations in the monetary exchange values of national currencies. Malcolm X Malcolm X, a civil rights leader in the 1960's believed that blacks and whites should be segregated. He also believed that white man was evil and were trying to brainwash all blacks and that Martin Luther King's "non-violent protests" weren't working and that violence was needed for change. Malcolm X's life was a life with a lot of conflict and violence in it. Malcolm X was born under the name of Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925. His father was a baptist minister and an outspoken follower of Marcus Garvey, the black nationalist leader of the 1920s who preached that all blacks should leave the US and go back to Africa. While Malcolm's father was away and Malcolm's mother was pregnant with Malcolm, a group of KKK members came to their house and told Mrs. Little to send out her husband. She came out of the house and stood where all the KKK could see that she was pregnant and told them that Mr. Little was in Milwaukee preaching. The KKK, disappointed, shouted threats and told them to leave town. After this they broke every window in the Little's home and left. When Mr. Little came home and heard what happened, he decided to move as soon a Malcolm was born to Lansing, Michigan. Here was where Malcolm's father died at the hand of the Black Legion (X 4-! 13). After Malcolm's father's death, his mother who had to take care of eight children and endure threats from the KKK, suffered a nervous breakdown. As a result, Malcolm and his siblings were taken by the welfare department. Malcolm was later enrolled in a reform school and did very well grade wise. He was the best student in his class and wanted to become a lawyer. When the school heads heard about this, they sent a person to talk to Malcolm. This person told and convinced Malcolm that he was black and that he could never become a lawyer because of it. As a result, he dropped out of after the eighth grade and moved to Boston, Massachusetts where he worked several different jobs. Soon, Malcolm became associated in a gang and sold and used drugs, and was involved in many other criminal activities. His gang "career" ended when he got into some trouble due to a bet with the gang leader. Since the gang wanted Malcolm killed, Malcolm hid for a while. Soon, Malcolm decid! ed to rob a house which he heard had a lot of valuables in it. Soon one night, he robbed the house, but was caught later. Malcolm was charged with burglary and sent to prison for a maximum of eight years of which he served six. This was a turning point in Malcolm's life. While in prison, Malcolm educated himself and became interested in the teachings of Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm spent his time in jail educating himself and learning more about the Nation of Islam (later known as the Black Muslims). Their belief, which was contrary to Martin Luther King Jr.'s, mainly to was to segregated whites and blacks. The Nation of Islam wanted to establish a separate Afro-American homeland in the U.S. and believed that the white person is "the Devil" who wanted to enslave all non-whites. The Nation of Islam also strictly followed the Islamic belief. When Malcolm was released from prison after in 1952, he joined a temple in Detroit, and took the name Malcolm X. He took the name X because his present last name was the last name of the slave master who freed their slave and since the slave didn't know who their ancestors were, and therefore didn't know their real last name, they often took up the last name of their master. Many Muslims kept the name "X" because in math, "X" is represented as an unknown variable like their real last name. A person was to keep the name "X" until God himself gave them a "holy name"(Encarta 2). Soon after his release from jail, Malcolm worked for his oldest brother who managed a furniture store. Becoming a Doctor Many people think that becoming a doctor is difficult. Others have some sense that becoming a physician takes many years and is expensive. Most people realize that being a physician is difficult yet rewarding. All these people are correct. Becoming a physician is a long, arduous, expensive process that can only be accomplished with great dedication.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Before starting the process of becoming a physician (or any profession) you must do some honest soul searching. First of all you must be aware of the time commitment involved in becoming a physician. Medicine is a career that requires many years of preparation. Generally most people graduate college at age 22 and medical school at 26. Then after 3 years of internship and residency, many physicians begin their career at age 29. However, the training for some specialties can last until the physician's early to mid 30's. Obviously this can delay plans for marriage and starting a family. Some people begin their medical education after pursuing other careers, which can further delay the completion of their medical training. You must decide early on if you are willing to dedicate the time it takes to become a physician. As you can see, this is not a decision to be made lightly. More importantly, you must decide if medicine is a field that is right for the kind of person you are. I believe that there are three cornerstones of a successful career in medicine: „h A love for learning in general „h A true intellectual curiosity about medicine in particular „h A strong desire to help others. Being smart and doing well in the sciences are obviously important components of being a successful physician. However, do not fall into a medical career because you have done well in the sciences. Although this is a necessary requirement, you must also be able to relate well with people. As a physician you have an opportunity to help others. Wanting to help others and enjoying helping others are necessary attributes of a good physician. This is something that cannot be taught. However, there are many other professions that can help others. Politicians, religious leaders and social workers all have the opportunity to help others, perhaps in larger numbers. Medicine is a career filled with choices. In what other career can you choose between delivering babies, taking care of children,... ...al Colleges (AAMC) and The American Medical Association (AMA). Many states require only 1 year of training after medical school (internship) in an approved residency program as the bare minimum for obtaining a license. New Zealands History, Government, and Geography

New Zealand is an island country located 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southeast of Australia in Oceania. It consists of several islands, the largest of which are the North, the South, Stewart, and Chatham Islands. The country has a liberal political history, gained early prominence in womens rights, and has a good record in ethnic relations, especially with its native Maori. In addition, New Zealand is sometimes called the Green Island because its population has high environmental awareness and its low population density gives the country a large amount of pristine wilderness and a high level of biodiversity. He was also the first person to attempt mapping the islands with his sketches of the North and South islands. In 1769, Captain James Cook reached the islands and became the first European to land on them. He also began a series of three South Pacific voyages, during which he extensively studied the areas coastline. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Europeans began to officially settle on New Zealand. These settlements consisted of several lumbering, seal hunting, and whaling outposts. The first independent European colony was not established until 1840 when the United Kingdom took over the islands. This led to several wars between the British and the native Maori. On February 6, 1840, both parties signed the Treaty of Waitangi, which promised to protect Maori lands if the tribes recognized British control. Shortly after signing this treaty, though, British encroachment on Maori lands continued and wars between the Maori and British grew stronger during the 1860s with the Maori land wars. Prior to these wars, a constitutional government began to develop during the 1850s. In 1867, the Maori were allowed to reserve seats in the developing parliament. During the late 19th century, the parliamentary government became well-established and women were given the right to vote in 1893. The Government of New Zealand Today, New Zealand has a parliamentary governmental structure and is considered an independent part of the Commonwealth of Nations. It has no formal written constitution and was formally declared a dominion in 1907. Branches of Government in New Zealand New Zealand has three branches of government, the first of which is the executive. This branch is headed by Queen Elizabeth II who serves as the chief of state but is represented by a governor general. The prime minister, who serves as the head of government, and the cabinet are also a part of the executive branch. The second branch of government is the legislative branch. It is composed of the parliament. The third is the four-level branch comprised of District Courts, High Courts, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court. In addition, New Zealand has specialized courts, one of which is the Maori Land Court. New Zealand is divided into 12 regions and 74 districts, both of which have elected councils, as well as several community boards and special-purpose bodies. New Zealands Industry and Land Use One of the largest industries in New Zealand is that of grazing and agriculture. From 1850 to 1950, much of the North Island was cleared for these purposes and since then, the rich pastures present in the area have allowed for successful sheep grazing. Today, New Zealand is one of the worlds main exporters of wool, cheese, butter, and meat. Additionally, New Zealand is a large producer of several types of fruit, including kiwi, apples, and grapes. In addition, the industry has also grown in New Zealand and the top industries are food processing, wood and paper products, textiles, transportation equipment, banking and insurance, mining, and tourism. Geography and Climate of New Zealand New Zealand consists of a number of different islands with varying climates. Most of the country has mild temperatures with high rainfall. The mountains, however, can be extremely cold. The main portions of the country are the North and South islands that are separated by the Cook Strait. The North Island is 44,281 square miles (115,777 square kilometers) and consists of low, volcanic mountains. Because of its volcanic past, the North Island features hot springs and geysers. The South Island is 58,093 sq mi (151,215 sq km) and contains the Southern Alps—a northeast-to-southwest oriented mountain range covered in glaciers. Its highest peak is Mount Cook, also known as Aoraki in the Maori language, at 12,349 feet (3,764 meters) above sea level. To the east of these mountains, the island is dry and made up of the treeless Canterbury Plains. On the southwest, the islands coast is heavily forested and jagged with fjords. This area also features New Zealands largest national park, Fiordland. Biodiversity One of the most important features to note about New Zealand is its high level of biodiversity. Because most of its species are endemic (i.e. native only on the islands) the country is considered a biodiversity hotspot. This has led to the development of environmental consciousness in the country as well as ecotourism.
